The Benefits of Massage: Mid-Life

4/3/2014

Many mid-life adults find themselves balancing a full schedule of work and family with less time to exercise. Massage therapy is extremely beneficial in maintaining flexibility of any unused muscles that may occur from a decline in physical activity.

Massage therapy can also help ease aches and pains by stimulating weaker muscles and by loosening contracted, shortened muscles. It also gently stretches the muscles and surrounding tissues, keeping the tissues elastic.

Mid-life adults often suffer from postural stress, largely caused by working at a desk for long periods. This stress primarily builds around the neck and shoulders, resulting from bending over the desk. Stress also occurs in the lower back and gluteals, resulting from extended periods of sitting. Massage therapy’s ability to soften muscles and tissues helps combat the imbalance that sitting produces.

The mid-life years may witness some individuals taking on new responsibilities and undergoing life changes, which may bring about anxiety or stress. Massage can significantly reduce this stress and relax the mind. Stress reduction is important at this age, as it is a factor of controlling high blood pressure.

Massage therapy can also offer beauty benefits to midlife adults. By decreasing stress, it decreases the creation of stress lines on the face. It increases blood flow, which improves the condition of skin by brightening and plumping up slack areas.

Overall, massage therapy is beneficial when it comes to combating the changes that occur in the mid-life years. By decreasing the consequential discomfort of new stresses, it helps keep the body in harmony.
