Massage Benefits for Older People

3/31/2016

Twenty-one studies conducted from 1991-2009 showed statistically significant improvements in physical and psychological relaxation among the older participants. These results were experienced from either a three-minute back massage or a 10-minute hand massage.

Geriatric Massage is a particular type of massage therapy, specifically designed to benefit the elderly. Each technique is tailored to a specific health condition.

Benefits of Geriatric Massage include:
  • Improvement of the patient’s length and quality of sleep
  • Alleviation of headaches and other physical pain
  • Slowing down partial loss of mobility lost due to arthritis, etc.
  • Aiding in healing from injury and illness

In a short session, patients will see improvements in their blood circulation and muscle tension. The stress relief that results from massage alone can be extremely beneficial for patients mentally and physically.

Massage Therapy for Sports Injuries

Almost every athlete will experience some kind of injury during his or her career. No matter what degree of injury occurs, it is very important to take the necessary steps to heal properly so no side effects from the injury resurface later in life.

Even if you’re not an athlete, simple injuries such as rolling your ankle, back pain from bending over or lifting heavy objects, or even feeling sore after playing with your children should not be ignored.

For each kind of injury, whether it be broken bones, muscle tension, nerve pain, muscle spasms, etc., there is a massage therapy technique that can specifically target it. Each technique focuses on decreasing the swelling in joints and flushing out lactic acid, along with other metabolic waste, to improve circulation and speed up the healing process. Massage therapy can also improve muscle tissue and break down scar tissue, which not only helps the healing process, but weak or inflexible scar tissue can make you prone to injury in the future.

On top of all of the physical benefits, massage therapy helps improve a patient psychologically and physiologically.  A painful injury can sometimes cause mental distress, but the act of massage therapy can relax the mental state of the patient to aid the healing process.

With the temperatures being so inconsistent, it is much more difficult to stay away from that annoying annual cold we all get. No one wants to constantly be on medicine or antibiotics, so here’s another solution for you… massage therapy.

Along with loosening our stiff, frozen muscles, massage therapy also improves blood circulation throughout the body, which allows toxins to be flushed from our system and gets oxygen-enriched blood to our cells faster. When toxins and waste are eliminated from the body at a better rate, our immune system becomes stronger and our digestion improves.

Our lymphatic system gets a boost through the improvement of waste product elimination, which also helps reduce swelling from injuries. Lastly, massage also improves our breathing by breaking down any mucus or bronchial secretions. This also helps mucus not build up in the lungs, strengthening our respiratory system.

Come relax and let me help you stay healthy!

Aromatherapy: An Alternative Medicine

French perfumer and chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, coined the term “aromatherapie” in 1937. Aromatherapy is often referred to as Essential Oil therapy and is defined as, “the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.”

Essential oils are often extracted from leaves, bark, stems, flowers, roots or other parts of the plant. The practice is based on the idea that different oils can trigger emotional and physical reactions. Some common combination examples are:

Stress Relief: Bergamot, Chamomile, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Patchouli, Vanilla, and Ylang Ylang

Anxiety/Fear: Bergamot, Chamomile (Roman), Cedarwood, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, and Sandalwood

Fatigue: Basil, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Ginger, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lemon, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sandalwood

Memory Boosters: Basil, Cypress, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary

Sadness/Grief: Bergamot, Chamomile (Roman), Clay Sage, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang

When using the oils, a few drops can be added to a pot of hot water, a diffuser or even a cotton ball. It is important to not directly apply the oils to your skin, but they can be mixed into your favorite lotions or other oils that are safe for skin.
